just like enamored by this interaction i had yesterday and again today with this old gay man…not to be like ‘oh what a feeling to see someone who has survived’ but literally that & today we actually ended up chatting and he asked me “are you family?” which i didn’t catch at all until he gave me an extremely knowing look (chin tilt, raised eyebrow. and he really just had such a shine about him, too) and i just got flooded with this big stupid feeling thinking about how much he has seen and known…about many things but esp lgbt community as it exists offline and historically & how if i were to ask, and were somehow able to know, there are 1000 different lifetimes in his, i’m sure. his name is leonardo

oh how sad that “family” meaning queer is dying out. that’s always been such a lovely code word.

the idea of catching covid should be horrifying to people. we’re only 2+ years into this pandemic and are already seeing long term effects like cognitive decline, increased risk of heart attack and stroke, immunity depletion and dozens more health consequences of having even a “mild” case of it. we already know from SARS-1 that many who had it continue to suffer long term sequelae nearly 2 decades after their infection. we know of many other horrible long term consequences of other viruses that can appear decades after the initial infection [e.g. shingles from varicella zoster virus (chicken pox), cervical and oropharyngeal cancers from HPV, multiple sclerosis from epstein barr virus (glandular fever) + many more] and yet people are being completely blasé about getting their 3rd, 4th, 5th+ infection. we are going to look back at our current minimisation of the dangers of covid with absolute horror in the future when a decent amount of the population will be suffering from the long term effects of this absolutely piss poor management of a global pandemic

hey. you know polio? yeah, that disease that we now mainly associate with permanent paralysis and people needing iron lungs just so they can breathe??

do you know the actual percentage of cases that result in this horrible outcome?? it’s 0.5%. 1 in 200. of those, 5-10% die from asphyxiation, that’s 1-2 in 4000. chump change compared to covid’s (average) 1-2% mortality rate. and long covid’s 5-20% incidence rate.

and yet, for a disease that for a vast majority of people results in symptoms akin to a mild flu, or are even asymptomatic, the world came together and coordinated a mass global vaccination and education effort that has nearly eradicated the virus. because nobody deserves to be exposed to that risk when there are effective ways to prevent it.

but now have let loose and are completely downplaying the dangers of a far more virulent and infectious disease that has killed over 6.5 million people (and that’s just the ones that have been officially reported) and ruined the health of millions more. this pandemic has been a complete and utter public health failure and we are only at the beginning of the consequences of mass covid infection

long covid numbers may be upwards of 30%, including among asymptomatic infections, but yeah

Idk I’m getting tired of emails that say “OMG THIS PRODUCT IS SO CHEAP!!!” Instead of “this product is so well made and it will last you several years to come!!”

    Preach!!

Clothes are so flimsy now-a-days they’re practically see-through and they can’t handle washing more than like 20 times before they’re ruined.  Same with vehicles, same with phones, same with basically everything now.  Everything is flimsier and more breakable…

Everything is made as cheaply as possible so that the company can save 1/8 of a penny producing it.  That pads the profit margin numbers and buys the CEO a new yacht because stock prices go up slightly for a few days, which makes millionaires buying stocks happy.  And that’s all a company cares about.  Fuck  30, 10, or even 2 years down the road! They can make a fast buck today.

Longevity, both in products and in corporate thinking, is a critically endangered idea.

You’re 100% correct on all of this. Tbh when I made this post I should have added these, but I want to add them now at least to curb some despair. Because some manufacturers are just as fed up as we are!!

Buy Me Once is a website that sells products that, uh, you only have to buy once. They have razors, duvets, kitchenwear, hosiery, gardening tools—all that are designed to last as long as physically possible. Hell, they have a smartphone ($200, 4 year warranty) and a VACUUM, both made to never be replaced. A lot of these things are also self-serviceable (looking at you Apple).

There are other sites out there like this, but this is the one I know is reputable. There are also some clothing companies like Eddie Bauer, Uniqlo, LandsEnd, and Duluth Trading Post that all sell durable, reliable clothing. In Uniqlo’s case, they’re also recycling materials and creating innovative new ways to sew clothes, including just not sewing them at all.

So yes, the mainstream stores you see in the mall are USUALLY bad. But there are some out there that’re still working on improving and doing better all the time. The next issue we have to hurdle is money. Because how many of us can afford to buy an actual wool coat vs a synthetic something or other that’ll last two years?

George Bush is offering a Master Class on executive leadership. No doubt highlights will include: having a powerful father to help you advance in life! Using lawsuits to win office! Abusing national tragedies to lead your country into stupid, unnecessary wars! How to fail in responding to a natural disaster! And, in conclusion, building a political order that facilitates the rise of the Tea Party, QAnon, and Donald Trump!

  • How Republicans Are ‘Weaponizing’ Public Office Against Climate Action

    rjzimmerman:

Excerpt from this story from the New York Times:

Nearly two dozen Republican state treasurers around the country are working to thwart climate action on state and federal levels, fighting regulations that would make clear the economic risks posed by a warming world, lobbying against climate-minded nominees to key federal posts and using the tax dollars they control to punish companies that want to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Over the past year, treasurers in nearly half the United States have been coordinating tactics and talking points, meeting in private and cheering each other in public as part of a well-funded campaign to protect the fossil fuel companies that bolster their local economies.

Last week, Riley Moore, the treasurer of West Virginia, announced that several major banks — including Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan and Wells Fargo — would be barred from government contracts with his state because they are reducing their investments in coal, the dirtiest fossil fuel.

Mr. Moore and the treasurers of Louisiana and Arkansas have pulled more than $700 million out of BlackRock, the world’s largest investment manager, over objections that the firm is too focused on environmental issues. At the same time, the treasurers of Utah and Idaho are pressuring the private sector to drop climate action and other causes they label as “woke.”

And treasurers from Pennsylvania, Arizona and Oklahoma joined a larger campaign to thwart the nominations of federal regulators who wanted to require that banks, funds and companies disclose the financial risks posed by a warming planet.

At the nexus of these efforts is the State Financial Officers Foundation, a little-known nonprofit organization based in Shawnee, Kan., that once focused on cybersecurity, borrowing costs and managing debt loads, among other routine issues.

Then President Biden took office, promising to speed the country’s transition away from oil, gas and coal, the burning of which is dangerously heating the planet.

The foundation began pushing Republican state treasurers, who are mostly elected officials and who are responsible for managing their state’s finances, to use their power to promote oil and gas interests and to stymie Mr. Biden’s climate agenda, records show.
